18TH CENTURY BRITISH OR CONTINENTAL PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, unfinished upper half featuring religious symbols including Jesus on the cross and a lamb with a halo carrying a scepter, and various pictorial motifs including birds, a fountain, a tree, and an hour glass, lower half with six alphabet and numeral rows segmented by horizontal bands having several crowns in the first row, lower two rows with decorative stitching. Housed under glass in a modern wooden frame, mat covers the edges of sampler. 18th century. 7 1/2" x 14 1/4" sight, 10 1/2" x 17 1/4" OA.

Condition

Very good visual condition with light toning to linen, a small hole near the left lower corner, thread with some fading/fugitive color, a few losses to dark-colored thread, frame with minor wear and surface scratches. Not examined out of frame.
