AFTER CORREGGIO (ANTONIO ALLEGRI) (ITALIAN, ACT. 1514-D. 1534) SAINT MARY MAGDALEN READING OLD MASTER-STYLE PAINTING, oil on canvas, depicting a woman with blonde hair leaning on her left side reading in a landscape setting. Extensive script on verso describes the painting and its history in detail, even down to a passage reading "...that this valuable picture was, one stormy night in 1788, stolen from The Gallery by an audacious thief, enhances the romantic interest connected with it." Unframed. Continental. Mid to late 18th century, possibly earlier. 12" HOA, 15 3/4" WOA.
Condition
Good condition overall, having moderate craquelure and several paint chips missing to center of painting, a slight puncture near her feet, some areas of inpainting possible.
Deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum, Richmond, VA to benefit collections care, preservation, and future acquisitions.
