ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA STONEWARE ADVERTISING JUGS, LOT OF TWO, each having Bristol-slip with upper Albany-slip type glaze, comprising one miniature example and one example having applied strap handle with thumb-pressed lower terminal. Each having printed stamp to front including one with "JOHN AHERN & CO. / Alexandria, Va" and one featuring "COMPLIMENTS OF / F. M. ADAMS. / 800 WOLFE ST. / ALEXANDRIA. VA." Late 19th/early 20th century. 3 1/8" and 10 3/4" HOA.
Catalogue Note: The Ahern family entered the grocery and liquor business by 1870. John Sr., an Irish immigrant, was listed as being a "grocer" in the census for that year. His sons, Michael and John (Patrick) later joined their father in the successful family business. Frank M. Adams (1866-1913) is listed on the 1900 and 1910 census as a grocer or grocery store merchant. 


Ahern example having a few shallow chips to base underside edge, a minor chip to shoulder, and discoloration and crazing to Bristol-slip decoration; miniature example having a flake to mouth and base, and a moderate scratch adjacent to handle.
