AMERICAN SCHOOL (19TH CENTURY) FOLK ART CUT-WORK / SCHERENSCHNITTE NAUTICAL SCENE, watercolor on paper, vignette depicting a two-masted ship on choppy sea waters with a cloudy sky above, surrounded by a cut-work/Scherenschnitte frame with flower designs, top third with American patriotic motifs, center featuring a spread-wing eagle clutching arrows in its talons above a banner with the motto "E. Pluribus / Enum." written on it and an American shield, flanked by two angel figures, each with a trumpet in one hand and an American flag in the other, backed by a plain piece of paper, no signature located. Housed under glass in a period gilt-molded frame. 19th century. 15 1/4" x 12 1/4" sight, 18 1/4" x 15 1/8" OA.

Condition

Very good visual condition, paper with some toning and foxing, a few stains, center vertical with crease and possible tears, cut-work frame with some tears/breaks and a few losses mostly to stems and leaves, frame with wear, surface scratches, hairlines/cracks, and some flakes and chips to molding notably at corners. Not examined outside of frame.
