ANTIQUE PARLOR GUITAR WITH ORIGINAL CASE, six string, spruce top with inlaid rosette and edges featuring mother-of-pearl painted as roses, rosewood sides and back with wood body bindings, neck with later black-painted finish and ebony fretboard, slotted headstock with replaced tuning pegs having patent date of October 22, 1895, interior featuring a probably spurious label for luthier Jean Baptiste Vuillaume (French, 1798-1875) that reads "VUILLAUME / A PARIS / rue Croix des petits champ / No. 46 / 1253", housed in original wood coffin guitar case with black-painted finish, having lock lacking key, a handle and two latches to side, hinged lid with marbled paper to interior, and interior base having a small box and probably later added felt. Second half 19th century. 37" LOA.

Condition

Fair overall condition with wear, several cracks and spots of warping, some losses to inlay and to body binding on back edge, possible repairs; case with wear, surface scratches, and other imperfections, one edge of lid and corresponding base side having repairs with area of separation from top causing the lid to not close all the way, key not included.

Deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum, Richmond, VA to benefit collections care, preservation, and future acquisitions.
