BRANNER FAMILY, TIMBERVILLE, SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA OVERSHOT COVERLET, red and black or black-blue wool and natural cotton, two joined panels, overall repeated circle or square pattern, all four edges with applied red and blue wool fringe. Second half 19th century. 81" x 100" with fringe.
Catalogue Note: The pattern of this present coverlet parallels Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates, 7/16/2016, lot 100. That previously sold coverlet was from the collection of Gene and Betty Driver of Broadway, VA, which was exhibited at "Colorful and Cozy: The Woven Art of the Coverlet", Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society, December 2015-March 2016.
Excellent overall condition except for possibly a few small losses to wool or manufacturing flaws along center seam, some light toning along center seam, one half of one panel having some linear lines of bleeding to red wool at places it was dyed a purplish color.
