Catalogue Note: Dr. Lynn discovered this group in the desk of Alexander Donnan behind his house at 50 South Market St., Petersburg.
Alexander Donnan (1818-1892) and his brother James Monroe Donnan (1824-1893) were prominent Petersburg lawyers who specialized in hiring out and selling slaves. Their advertisement in the December 15, 1860 issue of the Petersburg Daily Express was headed "SERVANTS FOR HIRE FOR THE Year 1861" and offered "Servants, of all ages, sexes, and capacities - Factory and Field Hands, Draymen, Ostlers, Dining Room Servants, Smiths, Cooks, Washers, Nurses, and others."
The Library of Virginia houses an archive of Donnan papers dating from 1835 to 1892, accession #51763.
Most are in very good or better condition, some covers with losses or tears.
