EDWARD SAMUEL DODGE (NEW YORK / VIRGINIA, 1816-1857) MINIATURE PORTRAIT OF A MAN, watercolor, retains note attached verso "Edward S. Dodge / Mr. C. A. Harrison of Caroline Co., VA / April 30. 1845", and signed, dated, and inscribed to back by artist which reads, "Painted by Edward S. Dodge, at Richmond Va Apl. 30 1845 - likenefs of Mr C A Harrison of Caroline Co Virginia". Housed in a rose gold frame (not tested) fitted as a brooch and pendant. Dated 1845. 3" x 2" OA.
Catalogue Note: Edward Samuel Dodge (1816-1857) was the younger brother of the well-known artist, John Wood Dodge (1807-1893). Born in New York, E.S. Dodge later moved south, where he earned respect and recognition for his miniatures painted in Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia.

Condition

Very good overall condition with minor areas of discoloration. Minor wear to frame. Not examine out of frame.
