Catalogue Note: Elizabeth O'Neill Verner (1883-1979) was an important American artist and an icon of the Charleston Renaissance. Born in Charleston, Verner remained in the city throughout her life, working as a painter, an etcher, a writer, and a lecturer. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, in London, and in Japan, and her art exhibits aspects of each influence. Verner exhibited widely throughout her lifetime, and her work is represented today in numerous institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Library of Congress, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Mount Vernon, and West Point Military Academy, among others. A significant female artist of her time, she is recognized today as a seminal Southern figure. The present lot is a fine example of her work, illustrating her ability to capture nostalgic scenes around her historic city.
