ENGLISH EARTHENWARE / REDWARE POTTERY BANKS, LOT OF FOUR, each having cut-out coin slot, comprising three lead-glazed examples including one squat ovoid-form example and one having dripped copper and manganese glaze over white slip, and one unglazed example with finial. 19th century. 4 1/4" HOA.
Provenance: From a Virginia private collection.

Ex-collection of Wallace James Grant-Davidson, Wales, United Kingdom (retain collection labels).
Catalogue Note: Some of the banks are from the collection of W.J. Grant-Davidson. Mr. Grant-Davidson was a historian and lifetime collector of eighteenth and nineteenth century British porcelain and ceramics. Following his death in 1999, Sotheby's auctioned his extensive collection which included pieces of Whieldon, redware, stoneware, Pratt-type wares, delftware, Staffordshire and Sunderland lustreware as well as creamware. He was the author of the article Early Swansea Pottery, 1764 - 1810 and the book The Pottery of South Wales.

Condition

Squat, no finial example having scattered glaze loss, otherwise undamaged; unglazed example having minor flake to base edge; one with minor flake to slot edge; multi-glazed example broken and glued.
