EXTREMELY RARE NOTCH-CUT PILLAR-MOLDED AND PRESSED PAIR OF VASES, brilliant deep emerald green, each having a deep conical bowl with eight pronounced ribs and a gauffered eight-petal rim, raised on a square monument base, wafer construction. Factory polished under base to level. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. or New England Glass Co. 1845-1860. 12 1/8 and 12 1/4" H, 5 1/8" DOA rims, 3 1/2" SQ bases.
Published: Barret - Blown and Pressed American Glass, pl. 11, middle row. Barlow/Kaiser - The Glass Industry in Sandwich, Vol. 3, p. 56, fig. 3019.
Catalogue Note: Kaiser wrote about this pair: "We agree with Richard Carter Barret, former director-curator of The Bennington Museum, that this pair is perhaps the finest known both in design and workmanship. The difference in height is due to a production error. Although the museum acquired each vase singly, they are well mated. We do not hesitate to call them a pair."
One virtually undamaged with some light roughness around the base edge; other having chipping to the base points. Each having some notches being slightly imperfect cuts, as made.
