FINE AMERICAN FOLK ART CARVED AND PAINTED NATIVE AMERICAN TOBACCO / CIGAR STORE TRADE FIGURE, solid body form in the round, depicting a proud Chief standing figure in full headdress, with arm raised to forehead surveying the landscape, and his proper right resting on a rock, his other hand is holding a bundle of cigars, a catamount around his neck, raised on its original platform base with cast-iron wheels, lettered "BEDELL'S / TOBACCO / & / CONFECTIONS / SINCE / 1887" to the front. Retains a historically accurate paint-decorated surface restored by master conservator Peter Deen. Probably the shop of Thomas V. Brooks (New York, 1828-1895). Circa 1870. 82" HOA.
