Catalogue Note: Frederick Nutt Broderick was a renowned photographer during the fourth quarter of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th century. His works are represented in institutional collections, including the Getty Museum and the British National Archives.
During his trip to North America, Broderick took over 3000 images with his Kodak camera. He spent considerable time visiting his family in Giles Co. and established an important record of late 19th century rural life in the Valley of Virginia while there. The present album was a gift to his aunt Margaret Eglantine Hale Broderick, widow of Henry W. Broderick, who had immigrated from England to the United States, settling in Giles County.
Upon his return to England, Broderick mounted several exhibitions of his North American travel views to great fanfare. During the early 20th century, he made an important contribution to the "real-photo" souvenir postcard craze that swept the United Kingdom.
Most images in good to very good condition, board pages are loose from the binding and covers are detached, most pages with light to moderate chipping to edges, some with rounded corners.
