Catalogue Note: Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Frederick William Sievers (1872-1966) spent the majority of his adult life in Richmond, Virginia, having studied overseas at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Rome and at the Academie Julien in Paris. Known for his abilities as a designer and builder of monuments and statues for public display, Sievers drew critical acclaim for his Virginia Monument at the Gettysburg Battlefield Park (1910) and received several commissions soon thereafter from across the region for similar historical monuments. An accomplished artist whose small-scale work is rare, Sievers is able to capture the physical essence of the hunting dog in the present example.
