FREE-BLOWN THREAD-DECORATED GLASS DOUBLE HANDLED MARRIAGE CUP, colorless glass with slightly gray tint, two vertically-ribbed pattern-molded round cups/small tumblers with threaded rims conjoined by a thick vertical strip of glass stuck between them, and with two ornamented double-ribbed handles on opposite sides of the joint, joined at both cups' rims and feet. Each upper handle attachment with a pulled/tooled and crimped thumbrest. Underside of cups with rough pontil marks and additionally with applied glass pad feet. Probably Continental. 18th/19th century. 3" H, 6 1/4" L.
Published: Cup discussed in Western Collector - Pioneer for Today's Collector, July 1969 Vol. 7 article titled "18th Century Amelung Glass".
Catalogue Note: It is said that the threaded rim matched a shard dug up at the Amelung location. This Gemini vessel is repeatedly referred to as a "German marriage cup" although that term is not explained in the article.
Fair condition, with a long crack originating at one upper handle attachment and descending into the body of one cup; missing most of the thumbrest at same handle attachment; overall crizzling.
