FRENCH LOUIS XV-STYLE ORMOLU-MOUNTED DESK / BUREAU PLAT, featuring leather top, and extensive ormolu-mounted decoration, including Rococo-style foliate scrolls and half-busts. Retains an early surface with warm color. 19th century. 31" H, 36" x 68 1/4".
Provenance: From the collection of H. C. Stuart and Emily Cochran, Stuart House, Staunton, VA. Property descended in the family of Henry Carter Stuart (1855-1933).
Catalogue Note: The present desk belonged to Henry Carter Stuart (1855-1933), 47th Governor of Virginia 1914-1918 and was reportedly a part of the furnishings of the Governor's Mansion in Richmond, Virginia during his term of office.
