GEORGIAN BRITISH PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER,
silk on linen, four alphabet and numeral rows segmented by horizontal bands of decorative stitching, signed "Adah Watson Marked this in the 11 year of her / Age 1814" with a row of initials that begins with "RW EW", below with a six-line verse above a field of various pictorial motifs including flowers and birds, lower half including religious imagery with figures featuring "Abel keeping / sheep", "Cain tilling / the ground", and two angels flying above Adam and Eve at the Tree of Life with the serpent, a yard with dogs and deer along the lower center edge, all encompassed by a scrolling vine border with buds. Housed under glass in a modern birdseye maple veneer frame. Reserve.

Catalogue Note: Possibly identified as Adah Watson born to parents Robert and Elizabeth Watson, who was baptized on June 5, 1803 in Brompton by Sawdon, North Yorkshire, England.
Condition
Very good to fine visual condition with discoloration and a few holes to edges of linen, some thread with light fading and fugitive color, frame with minor wear. Not examined out of frame.
