GORHAM PRESENTATION STERLING SILVER DIMINUTIVE TROPHY CUP FOR REAR ADMIRAL COLBY MITCHELL CHESTER (AMERICAN, 1844-1932), semi-ovoid bowl with gold-washed interior having two applied handles, raised on a stemmed foot, side of well engraved "REAR ADMIRAL C.M. CHESTER / FEBRUARY 28, 1906". Underside impressed with the three Gorham pseudo hallmarks above "STERLING" and "A4902". Total weight: 2.425 ozt. Gorham Mfg. Co., Providence, RI. Catalogue Note: Rear Admiral Colby Mitchell Chester was born on February 29, 1844 in New London, CT and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1863. He is the only naval officer to actively serve during the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and World War I. His more than 50-year career in the U.S. Navy included participating in operations against Mobile, AL in 1864 aboard the U.S.S. Richmond, commanding the U.S.S. Cincinnati and the U.S.S. Kentucky, becoming the superintendent of the U.S. Naval Observatory in 1902, and serving special duty in 1917 as the first commandant of the Navy ROTC units at Yale and Brown Universities.
Chester retired on February 28, 1906, making this present cup a gift for that occasion. Though, his active-service record was extended until 1909 to round out a full 50 years of service in the U.S. Navy. Chester died on May 4, 1932 in Rye, NY and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.

Very good visual condition with some wear, surface scratches, and nicks, several scattered dents, one handle with a slight bend, foot slightly bent causing it to wobble.
