HOLLINS INSTITUTE, ROANOKE CO., VALLEY OF VIRGINIA, STUDENT LANDSCAPE PAINTING, (updated 6/10/2024) oil on artist's board, depicting a fantasy landscape of towering mountains with a large waterfall over boulders in the foreground, a bridge spans between one of the boulders and the bank of the river and holds two figures, one of which holds a fishing pole. Signed lower left "M Wilkes 1857" in red. Likely painted under the direction of Charles Shoemaker who taught drawing and painting at Hollins Institute from 1855-1858. Stencil verso reads "HOLLINS INSTITUTE / BOT. SPGS. VA / SESSION 1856-1857." Housed in likely original gilt gesso frame. Dated 1857. 17 1/4" x 21 1/2" sight, 21" x 25 1/4" OA.
Literature: A painting by the same artist also painted at Hollins can be found in Teute (ed.) - "A Share of Honour": Virginia Women 1600-1945, p. 113 half page illustration.
Catalogue Note: An excerpt from Teute (ed.) - "A Share of Honour": Virginia Women 1600-1945 confirms the identity of the artist of this painting, and the illustrated example, as Matilda Catherine "Mattie" Wilkes Bowman (Lynchburg, VA, 1842-1864). In part, it reads, "Matilda Wilkes from Pierceville in Campbell County was a student at Hollins between 1852 and 1857. School records indicate that she studied drawing and then painting for three years. Another Wilkes landscape, in the same private collection as the one shown here, is stamped 'HOLLINS INSTITUTE / BOT SPRINGS. VA. / SESSION 1856-57.'" It's probable that the other painting this refers to is the present example. Matilda's father, Benjamin Wilkes (1801-1886) operated a tavern on the road from Liberty to Buchanan. Records indicating his multiple purchases of tracts of land and a large brick house called Lochwood Hall signal that the family had some significant financial success in the 1850s.
Hollins Institute began as the coeducational Valley Union Seminary in 1842. Rev. Joshua Bradley purchased the building from the defunct Roanoke Female Seminary, by 1852 the name changed to the Female Seminary at Botetourt Springs, in 1855 to Hollins Institute, and it is presently operating as Hollins University. Art was always a mainstay in the curriculum at Hollins, with the first studio art classes being offered to the students in 1853. The present lots by students of Hollins Institute open the door to an interesting study of the curricula of Valley of Virginia female academies of the mid 19th century.
Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates thanks Jenine Culligan and Isabel Folck of Hollins University for their contributions to the research of the art programs at Hollins Institute.
