IMPORTANT FREE-BLOWN AND PRESSED WHALE OIL STAND LAMP, opaque white, base with fiery opalescent edges, globe font applied with six wafers to an inverted conical stem resting on five graduated wafers, the whole raised on a Lion's Head and Basket of Flowers monument-form base without feet, later brass collar. New England, probably New England Glass Co. 1830-1845. 12 1/4" H to top of collar, 3 1/8" SQ base.
Literature: Parallels Bourne - The William J. Elsholz Collection, Vol. 1, lot 232.
Catalogue Note: This is an extremely rare lighting device that is represented in very few public or private collections. A pair resides in the Corning Museum of Glass collection, one of which is the above referenced Elsholz example that most recently sold through a 2006 Jeffrey S. Evans auction. Several examples with significant damage are in private collections.

Condition

Excellent condition overall with two base corners having expected chipping and losses; the base is in better than average condition for a monument base.
