JOHN D. CRIM (1874-1959), NEW MARKET, SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA PAINT-DECORATED TOLE TRAY, oblong sheet-iron form with cut-out handles and rolled rim, featuring hand-painted flowers to center framed by a vine border. Signed "John D. Crim, New Market, Va., May 18, 1949" to back. 1949. 19 1/4" x 26 1/2".
Catalogue Note: John Crim worked his entire life as a painter, mostly for the J. W. Clinedinst Co. of New Market, who began manufacturing carriages in 1855. They continued making high-quality carriages and buggies until 1917, when the shop transitioned into auto painting and repair service. Crim is listed in the 1900 and 1910 Federal Census as a "Carriage painter", and then in 1920 and 1930 as an auto painter. As a sideline, Crim produced decorated sheet-iron/tinware for the firm, and by 1940 he was working mostly on his own behalf. The Federal Census of 1950 records him as "Makes Trays".
Good overall condition with some small losses to the paint.
