JOHN WATSON (BRITISH / AMERICAN, 1685-1768), ATTRIBUTED, MINIATURE PORTRAIT OF MARY LAURENCE VAUGHN, pencil and wash en grisaille on vellum, waist-length depiction of Mary Laurence Vaughn, inscribed on reverse "Step daughter / Pilip Carteret / Mary Laurence / born 1666 - Married / to James Ematt / 1682 aged 17 He / came to ??? / that year. Afterward / married in 1714 the / Rev Fr Vaughn / being 47 yrs." Housed in an old frame. Possibly John Watson (British / American, 1685-1768). First quarter 18th century. 3" x 2 1/4" sight, 4 1/4" x 3 1/4" OA.

Catalogue Note: Mary Laurence Vaughn (b.1665) was the step-daughter of the first governor of New Jersey. She came to American in 1682. John Watson (1685-1786), the artist, was a British émigré, who settled in Perth Amboy, New Jersey and worked as a portrait painter.
