Catalogue Note: Maggie Jim Dixon was born on April 2, 1898 in Allen Co., Kentucky to parents James T. Dixon (1860-1931) and Mary "Mollie" E. Hudson (1868-1938). On September 11, 1921, Maggie married Jesse D. Downing (1897-1976), and the couple did not have any children. Maggie died on July 2, 1990 and is buried at Greenlawn and Shady Rest Cemetery in Franklin, Simpson Co., KY along with her husband.
Maggie's father, James, was the son of Thomas R. Dixon (b.1832) and Mary Frances Carpenter (1834-1863). Mary was the daughter of Samuel Eaker Carpenter (1795-1877) and Sarah "Sally" Gray Downing (1791-1855).
Originally born in Rutherford Co., North Carolina, Samuel Eaker Carpenter moved to Kentucky some time during his childhood, marrying Sarah on March 30, 1814 in Barren Co., KY. The family moved to Allen Co. within a decade of the marriage, where he was a farmer. Samuel served in the Kentucky legislature from 1841 to 1842 and 1849 to 1850 in addition as a state senator from 1844 to 1845. He owned 29 enslaved people in 1860, just before the start of the Civil War. He served as a clerk of the Allen Co. court in 1862 after the resignation of Richard W. Edmunds (c.1802-1869).
From its founding in 1833 until its dissolving in 1856, the Whig Party had a large influence in Kentucky. One of the most well-known Kentucky statemen, Henry Clay, helped found both the National Republican Party and the Whig Party. There were six Whig governors in this state, who served sequentially from 1836 to 1851. Since this quilt features 30 stars on most of the American flags, this would indicate this was made around 1848, when Wisconsin became the 30th state and before California became the 31st in 1850. In 1848, there was a presidential election with a successful Whig Party ticket of Zachary Taylor for President and Millard Fillmore for Vice President. The campaign and its success may possibly have been one of the reasons this quilt was made.
