MACON, GEORGIA MAYOR'S COPPER PLAQUE, "The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Medallion established by the New York Southern Society 1925" awarded by Mercer University to Charles Loyren Bowden, copper plate with bas-relief design depicting Sullivan in classical garb lighting a scholar's torch, with signature "J. E. Roine" in lower right corner. Housed in a wood frame. Circa 1940. 7 3/4" x 13 3/4" sight, 9 3/4" x 15 3/4" OA.
Catalogue Note: The award, named in honor of 19th century attorney Sullivan recognizes "excellence of character and service to humanity." Jules Edouard Roine, credited with the design, was an influential French-American medallic artist. Recipient Charles L. Bowden served as mayor of Macon, Georgia from 1938-1947.
