MARTHA ANN HONEYWELL (AMERICAN,1786-1856) FOLK ART HOLLOW-CUT SILHOUETTE OF A MAN, bust-length depiction, inscribed by the artist "Cut with the mouth by M. A. Honeywell" in lower margin, retains a late 19th/early 20th century ink-inscribed note which outlines a brief biography of the artist and includes what appears to be an exhibition reference for owner "(Mrs) Edgar Garfield / Mendham, NJ". Housed under glass in a period, possibly original, molded wood frame with ebonized surface and pine backing board. First quarter 19th century. 4" x 3 1/4" sight, 5 1/2" x 4 3/4" OA.

Catalogue Note: Born with no hands and only three toes on one foot, Martha Ann Honeywell (1786-1856) was a severely disabled itinerant artist who, despite these physical limitations, was nonetheless able to achieve international recognition for her creative gifts. According to Laura Daen in her 2017 article "Martha Ann Honeywell: Art, Performance, and Disability in the Early Republic" for the Journal of the Early Republic, the artist spent nearly 60 years traveling to five countries and 32 cities exhibiting her craft using only her mouth and remaining appendages. In 1807, for instance, Honeywell advertised her services at the Indian Queen Tavern, Fairfax Street, Alexandria, Virginia. A powerful figure who transcended physical obstacles, Martha Ann Honeywell stands as one of America's most important 19th-century disabled artists.
