MARYLAND MERCHANT'S STENCILED STONEWARE CANNER, salt-glazed, approximately half-gallon capacity, slight conical form with grooved wax-seal rim, beaded shoulder ring, Albany-glazed interior. Stenciled cobalt "C.F. HETZEL / & CO. / CUMBERLAND / MD." Circa 1870. 8" H, 4 1/4" D rim.
Provenance: Property from the estate of Clarence and Coralena Smith, Romney, WV.
Catalogue Note: Christian Frederick Hetzel (1838-1907) was born in Faurndau, Württemberg, Germany and immigrated to the United States when he was 10. He is listed as a merchant or retail grocer on the 1860, 1870, and 1880 United States census. In addition to his career, he was also elected to the Maryland State legislature twice.
