Catalogue Note: Born in Germany, Max Weyl (1837-1914) immigrated to the United States as a young boy, worked as a watch repairman, and opened a jewelry store in Washington, DC in 1861. He appears to have been self-taught as a painter and had gained enough recognition as such by 1878 to list himself as an artist in the city directory. Popular in his day, Weyl exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Brooklyn Academy of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Corcoran Gallery. His work today is represented in the National Gallery of Art, Georgetown University, and the Virginia Military Institute among others.
