NEW ENGLAND NEEDLEWORK SAMPLERS, SET OF TWO, silk on linen, comprising one with six alphabet rows segmented by horizontal bands of decorative stitching, lower edge signed "Mary E hopkins aged 8 years april the 3 1847 x", and one with horizontal bands of decorative stitching dividing the linen, featuring two alphabet rows above signature of "Mary E Hopkins De" and an incomplete row of "AB", a couple scattered foliate motifs including one completed in wool thread. Both housed under glass in a double-sided modern frame. Acquired from a Cape Cod family. Circa 1847. 13" x 7 3/8" each sight, 17 7/8" x 12 1/8" OA. 


Good to very good visual condition with each linen having light toning, some thread with fading/fugitive color; undated sampler with some scattered stains, a few spots of thread loss, two small holes at proper left side along center horizontal; frame with minor wear. Not examined out of frame.
