NEW YORK BIRDSALL FAMILY RECORD NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, two alphabet and numeral rows segmented by horizontal bands of decorative stitching, below with family record which reads, "Daniel W Birdsall born 27 of October 1767. / Phebe Birdsall born 9 of May 1777. Mary Birdsall their / Daughter born 18 of March 1798. William Birdsall born 10 of September 1800 / James Birdsall born 26 of April 1803. Ann Eliza Birdsall born 29 of June 1805 / Samuel Brewer Birdsall born 3 of September 1810. Hannah Birdsall born 23 / of July 1812. Martha Birdsall born 13 of Febuary [sic] 1815." above "Deaths. Phebe Birdsall departed this life 7 of July 1815 aged 38 Years 1 / Month 28 Days. Martha Birdsall her Daughter 15 of Febuary [sic] 1815 aged 2 Days / Hannah Birdsall 3 of November 1815 aged 3 Years 3 Months / 11 Days.", lower half with pictorial motifs including a bird perched on a tree and geometric designs, all encompassed by a chain frame and a floral vine outer border. Housed under UV glass in a modern frame. Circa 1815. 15" x 15 3/4" sight, 22 3/4" x 23 1/2" OA. 
Catalogue Note: Maker is identified as either Mary Birdsall (1798-1823) or Ann Eliza Birdsall (1805-1862), born to parents Daniel William Birdsall III (1767-1850) and Phebe Brewer (1777-1815). Their mother was the third out of four wives of Daniel, and the family probably lived in Westchester Co., New York around the time of the making of this sampler.
Mary married Medad Raymond (1786-1858) in December of 1816 and had at least three children before her death at age 25, and Ann Eliza did not marry by her death at age 57. Mary, Ann Eliza, and their mother Phebe are all buried at Old Van Cortlandtville Cemetery in Van Cortlandtville, Westchester Co., NY, and their father Daniel is buried at Hillside Cemetery at Cortlandt Manor, Westchester Co., NY. 

Condition

Good visual condition with linen having some holes and tears including a sizable tear in lower right half near one geometric motif, having light toning/discoloration with sizable stain/discoloration along proper left side, some losses to thread mostly to light-colored thread in alphabet rows, some thread with fading/fugitive color, frame with minor wear. Not examined out of frame.
