OUTSTANDING WYTHE CO., VIRGINIA WALNUT PUNCHED-TIN-PANELED FOOD / PIE SAFE, a benchmark example with exceptional tins, rectangular top over two short drawers above two hinged cabinet doors concealing two shelves, interior with early mulberry stain, raised on bold turned feet issuing from the stiles, each door features two joined tin panels hand-punched in the urn-grape-and-tulip pattern with Masonic-like stylized candlesticks in lower corners, each end set with a joined tin panel hand-punched in a similar pattern bearing additional oversized tulips in corners. Poplar and yellow pine secondary wood. Retains original knobs, hinges, locks, and a historic, untouched, dry varnished surface with original green- and black-painted decoration to tins. Attributed to the shop of Fleming K. Rich (Wythe Co., VA, 1806-1861), tins likely by Nimrod Rich (1796-1858). Mid 19th century. 49" H, 53" x 18 1/2" top.
Literature: See J. Roderick Moore - "Wythe County, Virginia, Punched Tin: Its Influence and Imitators", The Magazine Antiques, September 1984, p. 602, pl. III for a closely related example.
Catalogue Note: The present safe, a tour-de-force of Southern Backcountry design, is likely the collaborative effort of cabinetmaker, Fleming Kean Rich (1806-1861), and his step-brother, Nimrod Rich (1796-1858), who was a tinsmith / coppersmith working on an adjoining lot. Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates would like to thank Michael Gillman for his invaluable input on the Rich Family, and Nimrod Rich, in particular.
