PAGE CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA ASSOCIATED BOY'S / LADY'S LONG RIFLE, approximately .26 caliber, percussion, tiger maple halfstock with carved scrolls and heart, brass buttplate and trigger guard with naive engraved vine decorations, pewter foreend cap, two-piece brass patchbox engraved with a snake to the lid and "NO. 1" to tang, extensive German silver inlays including scissors, arrows, heart, six-point stars, diamonds, etc., rifled octagonal barrel with punchwork decoration to top, double set trigger, lockplate marked "Warranted" with engraved decoration, period ramrod. Retains an old surface. Circa 1850. 42 3/4" LOA, 28 1/2" L barrel. Class: Antique - no registration required.
Catalogue Note: This rifle was purchased from Dorothy Long, who indicated it had come from Fort Philip Long, a late 18th century stone house in the Alma area of Page Co., Virginia.
Fair condition, trigger will not set, stock broken at wrist and repaired, wood fill at break and around lockplate, loss of one heart inlay and top edge of forearm at one side, small piece of butt replaced.
