PE-1 PROVIDENCE MARKED PRESSED OPEN SALT, brilliant peacock blue, eagle-headed shield on each end, "PROVIDENCE" in base, raised on four scrolled feet. Listed as unique, now extremely rare. Providence Flint Glass Co. 1835-1850. 2 1/4" H, 2 1/2" x 3 1/8".
Literature: Neal, Pressed Glass Salt Dishes of the Lacy Period, p. 305. Like Bourne, The William J. Elsholz Collection, Vol. III, p. 400, lot 1502. Parallels Spillman, American and European Pressed Glass in The Corning Museum of Glass, p. 191, fig. 742, and color Plate Nine; Wilson, American Glass, Vol. 1, p. 347, fig. 440; and Rose, The Story of American Pressed Glass of the Lacy Period, p. 151, fig. 798.
Catalogue Note: Jim Rose noted "four specimens known in blue" in his catalogue for the 1954 Corning exhibition. He does not however make a differentiation as to the shades of blue, e.g. peacock or medium as recorded by Dorothy Neal. The Corning Museum example is medium blue, which is also listed as unique by Neal. We sold the Elsholz example of this salt in our 2018 dispersal of the Breckel collection.

Condition

Appearance is proof, however, there is an annealing check/crack off the rim of both sides and one end, each of which stops short of the base. The salt still retains its resonance suggesting all checks are as made.
