PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA ATTRIBUTED EMBROIDERED PICTURE, chenille, wool, silk, pencil, and paint on linen, depicting a woman with painted face and arms in an Empire dress, holding a branch of flowers in her outstretched right hand, seated under a tree in a landscape setting with a cottage to the left, featuring a painted sky in the background. Housed under glass in a 19th century wooden frame with gilt-molded liner. Design after the Folwell School, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. First quarter 19th century. 19" x 15 1/2" sight, 23 7/8" x 20 1/2" OA.
Catalogue Note: The pattern of this present embroidered picture exhibits characteristics of designs by Samuel Folwell (1764-1813), including the seated woman and the cottage. Due to the linen ground and extensive use of wool thread, this piece could not be attributed to the Folwell School, but is certainly a contemporary work likely made in Philadelphia.
For a silk-embroidered picture completed on linen designed and painted by Folwell, see Winterthur Museum collection, object number 1991.0046A. That example was completed by Sarah Catherine Skinner (Ward) while attending Miss Sarah Maltby's School in Philadelphia. According to the object catalogue entry, Miss Maltby was recorded in the city directories between 1802 and 1816 as living within a block of the Folwells' Dock Street School, likely giving her access to their designs.

Condition

Very good visual condition with painting having some spots of discoloration, some possible paint flakes, wool thread with some scattered losses and minor breaks notably to the grassy areas, frame with some wear and surface scratches, gilt-molding with scattered hairlines, a small loss at top near proper left corner and a break and glue repair along lower edge. Not examined out of frame.
