Catalogue Note: Snead & Co. was an innovative cast-iron manufacturing enterprise based in Louisville, Kentucky that specialized in public library design and furnishings, including shelves. The company is best known for these distinctive, industrial-style cast-iron open shelves that were placed in many of the major libraries constructed around the country at the turn of the century, such as The Library of Congress, the National Archives, and the New York Public Library. The presently offered example was a part of the original fixtures in the Denver Public Library, a grand edifice of Greek Temple design that was financed by Andrew Carnegie and opened in 1910.
