RARE FREDERICK CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA FEDERAL INLAID CHERRY VALUABLES CASE OF DRAWERS, the blind-dovetailed miniature high-chest form featuring a broken-arch pediment with applied moldings, the rosettes having alternating light and dark wood inlays, and a central molded drop; above four graduated mahogany-banded drawers having applied cockbeading; flanked by chamfered stiles featuring lambs-tongue terminations and vertical stringing; the whole raised on a banded base having scalloped front and end skirts and flaring French feet. Top drawer underside with penciled "Annie B. McCormick / Berryville / Va" inscription. Drawer knobs are later but in the original drillings. Poplar, chestnut, and cherry secondary woods. Retaining an older refinished surface with warm color. Late 18th/early 19th century. 27 1/2" HOA, 18 1/2" W, 10" D.
Catalogue Note: The present chest is an extremely rare form in Southern furniture. It is thought it was used in a lady's bedchamber for her personal items. Interestingly, only the top drawer is fitted with a lock.
This chest has descended in the McCormick Family of Frederick and neighboring Clarke Co. The first members of the family emigrated from Ireland to Frederick Co. in the 1760s. Its likely original owner was William McCormick (1768-1819), who was born in Frederick Co. and married Elizabeth Rice in 1795 in the same county. It then passed to their son Province McCormick (1799-1873), a wealthy Clarke Co. lawyer and farmer who built Rose Hill mansion in Berryville in the 1850s. The chest then passed to J. Marshall McCormick (1849-1918), a lawyer who served as mayor of Berryville from 1875 to 1877. He inherited the 100-acre Rose Hill estate upon his father's death. One of his daughters was Annie Brown McCormick (1879-1943), whose signature is under the top drawer.
This chest also bears a tag to the back from "L. F. White Interiors, Winchester, VA," made out to "Mrs. Foresight / Berryville" for repair and refinishing. The firm was founded in 1929 and went out of business in 2021. The tag probably dates from the 1950s. Nothing is known about Mrs. Foresight.
