RARE SET OF SIX WINCHESTER, SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA PAINTED FANCY CHAIRS, poplar and oak, each tablet crest with integral rear roll above two ring-turned posts centering a narrow slat and a shaped plank seat with rounded front, raised on ball-and-cuff turned front legs and tapered splaying rear legs, joined by simple box stretchers. Each retraining its original black paint, gold banding, and yellow pinstripes. Possibly the Shop of David Russell Jr (around 1799-1859), Winchester, Frederick Co., VA. Circa 1850. 32 1/4" HOA, 18" H seat, 19" W.

Excellent overall condition, one rear post broken at seat juncture, some small spots of paint loss and touchups, one with minor white paint spatter.
