RARE STAMPED "P. HERRMANN." BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, VIRGINIA MERCHANT'S DECORATED STONEWARE JAR, salt-glazed, "3" gallon capacity mark below handle, cylindrical form with squared rim, beaded neck, and applied arched handles. Stamped "P D GWALTNEY / SMITHFIELD VA" framed by brushed cobalt foliate garland and reverse with vertical double-bloom floral decoration, additional cobalt to handle terminals and stamp. The pottery of Peter Herrmann (1825-1901), Baltimore, MD. Circa 1875. 13 3/4" H, 8 1/2". 
Catalogue Note: Pembroke Decatur Gwaltney (1836-1915) was the son of Colonial Benjamin Gwaltney, a Revolutionary War hero. During the Civil War, he served in Hankins' Company, the Virginia Light Artillery (aka Surry Light Artillery), reportedly as an engineer for the Confederacy. After the war, Gwaltney became a successful businessman and merchant, making his fortune in peanuts, becoming known as the "Peanut King". He died in 1915 at the age of 79.

Condition

Excellent condition, except having a shallow chip to rim interior.
