RARE WASHINGTON, DC PATENT MILK BOTTLE / PRESERVING JAR, colorless, cylindrical wide-mouthed form with protruding ears molded below the rim around which a metal wire bail attaches, holding in place a specialized pressed-glass stopper, with inner surfaces factory-ground to fit. Bottle embossed on one side "F. K. WARD'S / MILK / PRESERVING / JAR / SEALED STOPPER / PATENTS / 1890 & 1892" and "WASH CLEAN / WHEN EMPTY", and at other side, "WHEN EMPTY / RETURN TO / WARD'S / ALDERNEY / MILK / P & C / ASSOCIATION / WASHINGTON. D.C." Also embossed "- W - Purity / Cleanliness" around neck and "THIS / JAR HAS / BEEN STOLEN / IF OFFERED / FOR SALE" to underside. Stopper embossed with a pictorial cow on one side between "TRADE MARK" and also "REFUSE A BROKEN SEAL". Circa 1893. 8" HOA, 3" D base.

Condition

Bottle in excellent condition with inner rim nicking, as made, and one large flake above the end of the word "Cleanliness"; stopper fair condition with multiple large chips at outer edge including one erasing most of the cow head pictorial.
