RICHARD BATTERHAM (ENGLISH, 1936-2021) STUDIO POTTERY STONEWARE LARGE BOWL, featuring faceted exterior design with dark olive green-glazed exterior and light celadon-glazed interior. Unmarked. Late 20th century. 7" H, 11 3/4" D rim.
Catalogue Note: Richard Batterham first became interested in pottery when he was thirteen years old. He officially began his pottery career in the early 1960s after a two year apprenticeship at the Leach Pottery in St. Ives, Cornwall. He set up his own pottery with his wife, Dinah (also a potter), in Durweston, Dorset in 1959, where he remained for over seven decades. While his range of shapes and glazes are considered minimal, Batterham is considered one of the finest British studio potters. One article wrote of Batterham's vessels, "his pots are made to enrich life, rather than to adorn it". Batterham would have agreed wholeheartedly, describing his creations as objects to be used, not simply admired.
