ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA CHIPPENDALE-STYLE WALNUT SLANT-FRONT DESK, dovetailed case, the hinged slant lid concealing a fitted interior featuring central prospect door flanked by pigeon holes and small drawers, above four graduated drawers with scratch-beaded profile, flanked by solid ends, the whole raised on an applied cut-out bracket-foot base. Large interior drawer with inscription reading "Wm. M. Saufley / Sept. 20 1861". Yellow pine secondary wood. Replaced brasses. Third quarter 19th century. 46 1/2" HOA, 38" WOA, 19" DOA.
Catalogue Note: A William M. Saufley (1808-1872) is recorded as a farmer living in Friedens, Rockingham County, VA. He was a private of the company C of the 58th military infantry regiment in the Civil War.
