RUSSIAN ORTHODOX FIERY ASCENSION OF THE PROPHET ELIJAH ICON PAINTING, polychrome-painted surface with red and/or brown background on wood board, three scenes featuring the Prophet Elijah and his disciple Elisha, which includes a vignette at top showing Elijah's ascension to heaven riding a chariot pulled by horses of fire; hand-painted black Cyrillic writing throughout and additional Cyrillic carving to rear. Probably Russian. 19th century. 10 1/4" x 12 3/4" OA.

Poor condition, heavy staining or discoloration to the painted surface and age-related craquelure and bubbling throughout, there seems to be some significant in-painted restoration obscuring much of the scene. Moderate chipping to edges. Board drilled verso with modern wall-hanging hook.
