RUSSIAN ORTHODOX ICON PAINTINGS, LOT OF TWO, each having polychrome-painted surfaces with light brown and/or red and dark brown background on wood boards, comprising one with assorted Liturgical vignettes including a Madonna and Child, Saint Nicholas, and Saint George slaying the Dragon; the other with central Joy of All who Sorrow scene and with a vignette showing a small Christ Pantocrator view in a textured onion dome above; both with hand-painted black Cyrillic writing throughout. Probably Russian. 19th century. 12 1/2" x 14 1/4" OA larger.

Condition

Poor condition, the larger with heavy staining or discoloration to the painted surface and age-related craquelure and bubbling throughout, and also seems to have some significant early and crude restoration obscuring much of the scene; the smaller example with moderate or heavy exfoliation to paint which is unrestored. Boards drilled verso with modern wall-hanging hooks.
