SHENANDOAH CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA CARVED FOLK ART CANE / WALKING STICK, made by Elmer L. Frye / Fry, featuring simple carving "E. L. FRY / EDINBURG / VIRGINIA / MAY. 1935" above two swords, a leaf, and a snake. Together with a small account book with 1870s work entries by his father Samuel L. Fry, and a few Civil War entries by an unknown writer, including at Woodstock, Feb. 23, 1865 asking for Spencer Rifle cartridges, and several about marching; and a business card for Elmer L. Frye maker of "Hand Made Cedar Chests". Three pieces total. 32 1/2" LOA, 3 7/8" x 2 3/4".
Catalogue Note: Both Elmer Luther Fry (1891-1862) and his father, Samuel Luther Fry (1857-1942), were woodworkers, among other things.
Cane with medial crack to one side, book fair with many of the pencil entries smeared and illegible, some pages removed.
