Catalogue Note: Born in Washington, DC, Thomas Speiden Culverwell (1901-1977) worked for many decades as a topographer and illustrator for the U.S. Forest Service. He also served with the Office of Strategic Services during World War II. The present illustration, an early example of the Culverwell's work, demonstrates the artist's skill.
