VERY FINE PIEDMONT NORTH CAROLINA / VIRGINIA PAINT-DECORATED POPLAR BLANKET CHEST, an outstanding example, the hinged rectangular lid with molded profile and applied beaded moldings to underside over a dovetailed case, raised on an applied cut-out bracket-foot base. Retaining original iron hinges and red-and-black paint-decorated surface featuring a six-petal rosette/pinwheel flanked by a pair of stylized sun-like devices within circular reserves, and additional geometric motifs, including crescent moons, the ends and portions of lid and feet with red-and-black combed/streaked decoration. Circa 1830. 25" H, 44 3/4" W, 18 1/2" D.
Published: Advertiement for Greg K. Kramer, The Catalog of Antiques & Fine Art, Holiday, 2002, p. 67.
Literature: See Lucas - "Paint-Decorated Furniture of North Carolina", American Furniture, 2009, pp. 116-127 for a number of chests decorated in the "Fancy" manner.
Catalogue Note: The present paint-decorated blanket chest, discovered in the Piedmont region along the Virginia-North Carolina border, resembles similarly decorated chests attributed to a group of predominantly Germanic settlements in central North Carolina. In keeping with the standard Germanic tradition, the present chest exhibits a tripartite decorative scheme consisting of various geometric motifs arranged in a balanced format for the front panel and an overall muscular approach to construction, including oversized stock and exposed joinery.
