VIRGINIA CIVIL WAR HISTORICAL STEEL ENGRAVING, Burial of Latane after William De Hartburn Washington (Virginia, 1834-1870), inscribed "Engraved by A. G. Campbell" and "Published by W. H. Chase" in the plate at bottom. In period, possibly original frame. Published 1868. 35" x 42" OA.
Catalogue Note: This historically important engraving depicts the burial of CSA Capt. William Latane, who was killed during J.E.B. Stuart's "Ride around McClellan" in 1862. Latane was buried at Westwood, the home of Mrs. Catherine Brockenbrough. Several local women and slaves were the only funeral attendees because the Federal troops which had control of the area refused to allow clergy or anyone else to attend the service.
