VIRGINIA CONFEDERATE (C.S.A.) LIEUTENANT BALLARD PRESTON DEYERLE (1844-1872) ARCHIVES, comprising his Oct. 10, 1861 commission as Second Lieutenant of Light Infantry in the 157th Regiment of the 26th Brigade and Fifth Division of the Virginia Militia, signed by Gov. John Letcher; a four-page manuscript letter written from camp near Courtland, Lauderdale Co., AL on October 11, 1863 detailing Gen. Joseph Wheeler's Sequatchie Valley Raid against Maj. Gen. William Rosecran's Army, including the engagement at McMinnville where "I supplied myself with a pair of blue pants, a pair of boots, a very fine pair of Pattent (sic) leather gaiters, a hat, and a beautiful sword - also a Yankee canteen filed with fine brandy - natural consequences followed.", with original cover addressed to his brother in Salem, VA; a three-page manuscript letter written from Camp Hodge's Cavalry Brigade, Scott Co., VA on Feb. 25, 1864 mentioning Gen. Jones' skirmishes at Cumberland Gap and "I am trying to recruit my section of Artillery to a full Battery of six guns.", with original cover addressed to his brother in Salem, VA; a framed albumen-print image of a portrait of Deyerle in in his Confederate uniform; two oval albumen-print portraits by J. I. Van Ness, Lynchburg, VA; a two-page manuscript letter from the University of Virginia on Feb. 18, 1867 to his brother; his UVA Latin Exercises notebook with many laid-in newspaper clippings; and a lock of his hair in folded paper. Together with a photographic portrait of his brother, John S. Deyerle. Second half 19th century. Frame 13" x 14 7/8" OA. 
 Catalogue Note: Ballard Preston Deyerle was born on November 8, 1844 in Salem, Virginia to parents Joseph S. Deyerle (1799-1877) and Anna "Annie" Crawford (1800-1871). Ballard was the youngest out of a total of 13 children, eventually serving along with some of his brothers in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He was a member of the 54th Virginia Regiment during the march into Kentucky in 1861-1862. During the reorganization of the Confederate Army, he left his regiment and became a lieutenant in Howitzer's section of cavalry commanded by Col. Robert H. Logan of Salem, VA, in General Hodge's Brigade. In the spring of 1864, his command was sent to the Valley of Virginia, where he participated in many battles under General Early, including the battle of Fisher's Hill. After the war, Ballard attended the University of Virginia, becoming a civil engineer for his profession. He died on August 30, 1872 at age 27 and is buried at East Hill Cemetery, Salem, VA in the Deyerle/Barnett burial plot.
