VIRGINIA OR NORTH CAROLINA WALNUT DESK AND BOOKCASE,, two-piece construction, associated upper case featuring broken arch pediment with applied rosettes above two hinged glazed doors, desk with fall front concealing a fitted interior above four graduated drawers, raised on ogee bracket feet. Yellow pine secondary wood. Retains Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) sticker to interior drawer "S-13200". Retains an old surface with warm color. Possibly Norfolk, Virginia. Late 18th/early 19th century. 89 1/2" HOA, 40" W, 20 3/4" D.
Provenance: Property deaccessioned by the Colonial Williamsburg, Foundation, VA. All proceeds to benefit the Collections Acquisition Fund.
Acquired by Dr. W.W. Boyce of Due West, South Carolina in the 1930s in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

Desk and book are together by association, book case with later finial, rosettes and plinth split drop replaced; later glass. Desk with mid-molding not original; rear two-thirds of top replaced; valances replaced; all bottom writing interior drawers and drawers in prospect replaced; front desk board replaced; hardware replaced; feet and blocking replaced; bottom drawer replaced; drawer guides and stops replaced; assorted patches and repairs.
