WALTER LEE BARTON (NORTH CAROLINA / VIRGINIA, 1892-1973) FOLK ART CARVING OF A POLAR BEAR, the laminated body with applied legs and ears, red glass bead eyes, open mouth with applied tongue, plaster tail, and applied wooden claws, standing on a shaped base depicting an iceberg, and raised on a molded-edge base, stamped "WALTER L. BARTON / P.O. BOX 491 / CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA." to underside of base. Retains its original painted surfaces. Circa 1930. 6" H, 10" x 5 3/4" base.
Catalogue Note: Walter Barton was in Salem, NC to Pleasant Franklin Barton (1967-1942) and Mary Etta Moore (1866-1943). He was a master plasterer his entire life, a trade he learned from his father. He moved to Newport News, VA, after his second marriage, and by 1950, was living in Charlottesville, VA, where he continued his trade full-time. It is most likely he carved the present figure while living in North Carolina; however, it could have been produced shortly after he moved to Virginia.

Condition

Good as-found condition, with small loss to tail, lacking claws on one foot, minor flaking to paint, primarily at joints, and surface dirt/grime. No attempt has been made to clean the dirt.
