Catalogue Note: Warren MacKenzie was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1924. MacKenzie and his first wife, Alix, became the first American apprentices at the Bernard Leach pottery in St. Ives, Cornwall in 1950. While there, they also met and worked with Shoji Hamada, who greatly influenced their work. Mr. MacKenzie has been credited with introducing the Japanese Mingei, or folk, style of pottery to Minnesota, where it is known as the Mingei-sota style. In addition to establishing his own pottery in Stillwater, Minnesota in the 1950s, he also taught ceramics at the University of Minnesota from 1953 until his retirement in 1990. Warren MacKenzie passed away in 2018 at the age of 94.
